By the late 19th century, he had amassed considerable wealth and prestige, becoming a prominent figure in New York society.

Boldt’s vision for the castle was not just an architectural project but a labor of love. He intended to build the castle as a summer retreat for his beloved wife, Louise Kehrer Boldt, whom he adored deeply. Inspired by European castles and the grandeur of the Gilded Age, Boldt planned an opulent estate that would serve as a testament to his devotion. The project was set on Heart Island, a fitting name for a castle dedicated to love, in the idyllic setting of the Thousand Islands.

In 1900, construction of Boldt Castle began in earnest, with no expense spared. George Boldt hired over 300 workers, including the finest architects, stonemasons, and craftsmen, to bring his dream to life. The castle was designed in the style of a Rhineland castle, with six stories, 120 rooms, and elaborate features that showcased the wealth and taste of its owner.
